Getting Started

What You'll Need

•A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, or newer) running macOS 14.6+
•OR a Windows 10+ PC (64-bit)
•A microphone (built-in works great)
•5 minutes for setup

First Launch

When you first open JesType, a setup wizard walks you through everything:

Microphone Access

So JesType can hear you.

Accessibility Access

This lets JesType detect your shortcut key and paste text for you. It sounds like a big permission, but JesType can't read your screen or see what you're doing — it just needs this to work in the background while you use other apps.

Model Download

A one-time ~500 MB download (Parakeet). This is the speech recognition engine that runs entirely on your computer.

Choose Your Shortcut

Pick the key combination you'll use when you want to talk. Ctrl+Shift+R is the default.

Finding JesType

After setup, look for the JesType icon in your menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows). Click it to see recent transcriptions, copy something you said earlier, open settings, or check your usage statistics.

How to Use JesType

Your transcription also appears in the menu bar history — click the JesType icon to see recent transcriptions if the auto-paste missed or you need to use something again.

Recording Modes

Both (Default)

Hold shortcut to talk, release to stop. Or tap shortcut to toggle recording on/off.

Hold Only

Hold shortcut → Speak → Release. Simple and direct.

Toggle Only

Tap once to start recording, tap again to stop.

Change in: Settings → General → Recording Mode

Recording Indicator

While you're recording, a compact always-on-top overlay appears with a real-time audio level indicator so you know JesType is listening. You can cancel or stop the recording from the overlay.

Features

Automatic Copy

When you finish speaking, your transcription is copied to the clipboard automatically. No extra steps — just paste wherever you need it.

Auto-Send

After pasting the transcript, Auto-Send automatically presses Enter to send. Great for chat apps. Off by default.

Transcription History

Every transcription is saved locally with timestamps. Search your history, replay the original audio, or copy previous transcriptions. Configurable limit (10–250 entries).

Multiple Paste Methods

Choose how text is inserted: Cmd+V (Mac) / Ctrl+V (Windows), Shift+Insert, Ctrl+Shift+V, or direct typing. Pick what works best with your apps.

Clipboard Restoration

JesType restores your original clipboard contents after pasting, so you don't lose what you had copied.

Voice Activity Detection

Automatically detects when you start and stop speaking. Includes a prefill buffer so it catches the beginning of your speech.

Text Processing

JesType automatically cleans up your transcriptions through a multi-stage pipeline.

Removing Filler Words

Quietly removes "um," "uh," "hmm," "ah," and "er" so your text reads more cleanly.

Converting Numbers

Converts spoken numbers to digits. Supports everything from single digits to millions.

What you say:

"The total is two hundred fifty dollars"

What you get:

"The total is 250 dollars"

Additional Cleanup

•Punctuation fixing — removes extra spaces before periods, adds spaces after
•Capitalization — first letter of sentences, standalone "I"
•Hallucination removal — strips AI artifacts like YouTube-style outros or bracketed markers
•Repeated word/phrase removal — fixes "the the store" → "the store"

Speech Models

JesType supports multiple speech recognition models. As better models come along, we'll add them — your license includes all future model updates.

Parakeet (Recommended)

DEFAULT

Best balance of speed and accuracy. English-only. ~500 MB download.

Whisper

Available in multiple sizes: tiny (75 MB), base (148 MB), small (488 MB). English-only variants.

Moonshine

Additional model option for speech recognition.

Switch between models in Settings → Models. Models auto-unload after 10 minutes of inactivity to save memory, and can be hot-swapped without restarting the app.

Word Replacements

Teach JesType your vocabulary — names, terms, and shortcuts that make it feel like it actually knows you.

Why Use Word Replacements?

Fix Consistent Errors

If JesType consistently mishears something, add a rule to fix it automatically.

Proper Capitalization

Names, brands, and acronyms: iphone → iPhone, api → API

Technical Terminology

Industry-specific terms: kubernetes → Kubernetes

Text Expansion

Short → long: addr → 123 Main Street, Suite 400

Matching Modes

Exact Mode

Whole-word boundary matching. Only replaces when the exact word is found.

Fuzzy Mode (Default)

Uses Levenshtein distance, Soundex phonetic matching, and N-gram analysis to catch close matches and common mishearings.

Pro Tip

Start small — add rules as you notice problems, don't try to predict everything. After a few weeks of building your word replacements, it'll feel like JesType knows your vocabulary.

AI Rewriting

Optionally polish your transcriptions with an LLM. After transcription, the AI rewrites and cleans up your text based on your custom prompt template.

What you say:

"hey can you send me the report when you get a chance thanks"

After AI rewriting:

"Hi, could you please send me the report when you have a moment? Thanks!"

Powered by OpenRouter, giving you access to a wide range of AI models. We keep the model list updated as better options become available. Set up in Settings → AI Processing with your OpenRouter API key. Create custom prompt templates using ${output} as the placeholder for your transcription text.

To hear your voice during recording. Audio is captured only while you're actively recording (holding your shortcut).

Data Storage

All data is stored locally in your app data folder: ~/Library/Application Support/jestype/ on Mac. This includes settings, word replacements, transcription history, audio recordings, and downloaded models.

Troubleshooting

Problem	Quick Fix
Shortcut not working	Check Accessibility permission in System Settings (Mac). Toggle it off and back on, then restart JesType.
No audio detected	Check Microphone permission. Verify the correct input device is selected in Settings → General.
Wrong words	Add word replacement rules. Try a different speech model. Reduce background noise. Use the built-in microphone.
Blank transcription	Speak louder. Check microphone selection. Move closer to the mic.
App won't open	Confirm macOS 14.6+ or Windows 10+. Restart your computer. Download the latest version.

Fixing Permission Issues

Shortcut not responding? (Mac)

1. Open System Settings
2. Go to Privacy & Security → Accessibility
3. Find JesType in the list
4. Toggle it off and back on
5. Restart JesType

Microphone not detected?

1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
2. Make sure JesType is listed and enabled
3. Restart JesType
4. Try a test recording in Voice Memos to verify your mic works

What is JesType?

JesType is an ultra-fast, offline speech-to-text app for Mac and Windows. Hold a shortcut, speak, and your words appear as text — in any app, fully private.

Does my voice get sent somewhere?

No. Everything is processed locally on your device. Your audio never leaves your computer.

Will it work on my computer?

Mac: Apple Silicon (M1–M4+) with macOS 14.6+. Windows: Any 64-bit PC with Windows 10+.

How much does it cost?

$15 one-time for 1 device, or $45 for 5 devices. No subscription, no recurring fees.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. After the initial model download, JesType works completely offline.

Using JesType

How do I actually use it?

Hold your shortcut key (Ctrl+Shift+R by default), speak, then release. Text appears where your cursor is. You can also tap to toggle recording on/off.

Can I use a different shortcut?

Yes. Go to Settings → General to set any 2 or 3 key combination.

It's making mistakes. How do I fix that?

Add word replacements for consistently wrong words. Try a different speech model. Reduce background noise.

What languages does it understand?

The Whisper Multilingual model supports 100+ languages. Parakeet and the English-only Whisper models are tuned specifically for English.

What is AI Rewriting?

An optional feature that sends your transcription through an LLM to polish the text. Powered by OpenRouter, giving you access to a wide range of models. Requires an OpenRouter API key.

Privacy & Purchasing

Is my data actually private?

Yes. Audio is processed on-device and immediately discarded. Transcriptions are stored locally in your app data folder. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Why does it need Accessibility access?

On Mac, this lets JesType detect your keyboard shortcut in any app and paste text automatically. It cannot read your screen or see what you're doing.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment, yours forever. All updates included.

I have multiple computers. Can I use it on all of them?

The $15 Starter license covers 1 device. The $45 Team license covers up to 5 devices, Mac and Windows mixed.
